Deterding Awarded South Central Community Foundation Grant for Book Study

Greensburg, KS - Melanie Deterding, Kiowa County High School counselor and coordinator of the teacher aide program, has received a South Central Community Foundation Community Grant. The grant will be used for a book study with teacher aides based on the book Help for Billy by Heather T. Forbes. 

Deterding said, "Help for Billy was a life-changing book for me, so while it will directly impact the 15 students in 2022-23 as they apply the information they learn, I hope the impact is more far-reaching than that as it impacts the students they work with in our classrooms, people they interact with during their lifetimes, and even their own children someday. I sincerely believe that after reading Help for Billy, a person has more empathy for others, learns to be a little kinder, and can even help a person learn to regulate their own emotions more effectively."

The books purchased with this grant will be used in future years with additional teacher aides.
